Finding your next step

What happens to your device in the lab?

Knowing what happens at each stage can make an assessment easier to follow. The device and its condition determine the work involved, and we explain the findings before you decide whether to proceed.

Understanding the fault and your priorities.

We assess the device, the failure and any previous attempts. An electrical fault, damaged heads, controller problem and deleted folder need different approaches. Your priority files and deadline belong in that assessment too.

You receive the findings and a written recovery quote before work begins. Standard single-device evaluation is free within 72 hours. Arrays, opened devices and priority evaluations are quoted separately. Additional work needs your approval.

Making the device accessible.

A failing device may need a connector repair, matched donor components or a way around a firmware fault before it can be read. Some SSDs need a custom routine to stay accessible. Mechanical hard-drive work takes place in the clean room.

This work aims to obtain access to your files. A device made readable for recovery may remain unreliable, so recovered files are returned on separate storage.

Preserving the original information.

A hard-drive circuit board can contain information specific to that drive. Some external-drive electronics also handle encryption. Keeping those original components matters when a board is repaired or replaced.

Once access is possible, we image readable data onto separate storage. Where damaged areas remain unreadable, we explain how those gaps may affect the files you need.

Rebuilding folders, files and recordings.

We work from the image to reconstruct folders and files. RAID work also involves determining disk order, stripe size and parity. Flash recovery can require rebuilding the layout previously managed by its controller.

When directory information is lost, recoverable content may return without its original names or folders. Camera footage may need its recording structure and playback index rebuilt before it becomes a usable clip.

Understanding what came back.

The useful result is a file you can open or a recording you can play. Recovered content is checked, and video is played back before return. We explain any damaged files, unreadable areas or missing content that affect the result.

Knowing which documents, projects or recordings matter most helps us focus those checks on your priorities. It also gives you a clearer picture of what the recovery has achieved.

Receiving and reviewing your files.

Recovered files are returned on new media or, with permission, by secure download. Reviewing your important files soon after return gives you time to raise any questions. A second copy helps protect them going forward.

Our working copy is deleted seven days after completion unless you ask in writing for longer retention. If no files can be recovered, there is no recovery charge, including parts. Any separate diagnostic fee is agreed in writing first.
