Case file · Sony FX3, 256 GB CFexpress card, 4K HEVC video
184 of 194 cinema clips from a formatted card
A production company's 256 GB CFexpress card from a Sony FX3 had been formatted, taking 194 clips of 4K footage with it.
184 of 194cinema clips brought back
10clips that couldn't be recovered
256 GBCFexpress card, formatted
What made it difficult
- Formatting removed the card's file system, so the clips had to be found from the video itself.
- The FX3 records 4K HEVC. A clip only counts as recovered if it plays and edits properly, not just if the file exists.
What we did
- Imaged the card and worked only from the copy.
- Located the clips from the camera's own recording structures and repaired them at the stream level.
- Handed the recovered clips to the client, who checked them in DaVinci Resolve, their editing software.
The result
184 of the 194 clips came back and opened in DaVinci Resolve. The client's verdict: "The clips that you found work in Resolve!" The other 10 couldn't be recovered.
